More weekly operations ensued until the Billfish again returned to the Mediterranean Sea in early 1981. Operational excellence on this patrol was recognized, when, upon surfacing on the way back home, Billfish strapped an inverted broom to her scope signifying a clean sweep.
Gibraltar, located on the southern tip of Spain, is the choke point to the Med.
I took this photo from the top of the 'Rock' looking inland, if you look at the post card above, I was about
half way out the peninsula at the highest point.

All shipping must traverse this bottleneck making
it a favorite surveillance site for friend and foe.

Billfish in La Spezia (floats and shore power cables)
The Billfish visited Portsmouth, England* in the fall of 1981 on her way to crossing the arctic circle at 'classified' longitude, for another northern run.
*The lead photo on the USS Billfish page was taken as the Billfish entered Portsmouth harbor in September of 1981.
